Affiliate marketing for beginners can feel like learning a new language. The first time you open a partner dashboard, you meet a wall of abbreviations: CPA, RevShare, GGR, NGR, FTD and qualifying player, plus terms such as negative carryover and minimum payout. This guide is written for South African content creators, sports community admins and marketers who are thinking about promoting licensed sports betting brands. It explains what each term means, how the figures connect, and where to find the official definitions, so that you can read your statements with confidence instead of guessing.
Affiliate marketing for beginners: how the model works
Affiliate marketing is a referral arrangement. A brand gives you a unique tracking link or promo code. When someone opens an account through that link, the brand can attribute the referral to you, and you receive a commission under the terms you agreed to. You do not sell anything directly, hold stock or handle customer accounts. Your role is to create honest, compliant content for an adult audience.
At YouBet Partners, the brands are licensed South African sports betting operators. YouBet Partners is an affiliate network, not a gambling operator, and each partner brand holds its own South African provincial licence. That matters for beginners, because the rules you promote under come from two places: the YouBet Partners affiliate terms and the operator's own requirements. Where the two differ, the stricter rule applies.
It also matters what you may promote. Only licensed sports betting is part of the programme. Online casino games, including online slots and live casino, are not allowed and must never appear in your marketing, even if an operator's website offers them.
The flow in four steps
- Promote: you publish content containing your tracking link, clearly labelled as advertising (for example with #AD).
- Player signs up: an adult in South Africa opens an account with the operator through your link.
- Commission earned: if the referral meets the conditions in your Commission Schedule, it counts towards your commission.
- Paid monthly: payable commission is paid out once it reaches the minimum threshold.
CPA, revenue share and hybrid explained
Every dashboard is built around a commission model. The commission page lists three ways to earn, with rates agreed with each operator. Your Commission Schedule shows which model applies to you for each operator, and you earn only one model for each player at a time.
| Model | What it means | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| CPA (cost per acquisition) | A fixed, one-time amount for each qualifying player, agreed per operator | Media buyers and high-volume campaigns |
| Revenue share (RevShare) | A share of NGR from players you refer, up to 40% | Creators and communities building a long-term audience |
| Hybrid | A fixed amount plus revenue share, agreed per operator | Established partners wanting upfront and long-term earnings |
How your rate is set
Under the affiliate terms, the default rate is 70% of what the operator pays YouBet Partners for the same players. The terms give an example: if the operator pays 30% of NGR, your revenue share rate is 21% of NGR. The same 70% principle applies to a CPA amount, and to both parts of a hybrid deal where the operator pays on a hybrid basis. Your actual rates are always the ones shown in your Commission Schedule.
A practical point for beginners: none of these models is a promise of any particular amount. What you receive depends on your traffic, on how many referrals qualify, and on what the operator actually pays for them.
GGR and NGR: where revenue share comes from
If you choose revenue share, two abbreviations matter more than any others.
GGR (gross gaming revenue)
GGR is the total amount staked by your referred players with an operator, less the winnings paid to them, for the relevant period, as reported by the operator. It is a starting figure, not the number your commission is calculated on.
NGR (net gaming revenue)
NGR is GGR less a list of deductions, all as reported by the operator for your players. According to the commission page and clauses 1.10 and 1.11 of the affiliate terms, those deductions are:
- bonuses, free bets and other promotional costs;
- gambling taxes and levies;
- payment processing costs, chargebacks and reversed transactions;
- losses from fraud, bonus abuse and bad debt; and
- any platform, licence, provider or other fees the operator deducts under its terms with YouBet Partners.
Revenue share commission for a month is then simply the NGR of your qualifying players multiplied by your revenue share rate. YouBet Partners does not add an admin fee of its own on top of these deductions.
Negative carryover
NGR can be negative in a month, for example when winnings and deductions exceed stakes. Negative carryover is the practice of carrying that negative figure forward so that it reduces future commission. YouBet Partners has no negative carryover: if NGR for an operator is negative in a month, your revenue share for that operator and month is zero, and the negative amount is not carried forward. The exception, set out in clause 3.5, is where the operator itself carries losses over to YouBet Partners; in that case the same carryover applies to your players. Negative amounts caused by fraud, bonus abuse or a breach of the terms may also be set off.
FTD, qualifying players and other dashboard terms
FTD (first-time depositor)
FTD is a general industry abbreviation for a referred person who makes their first deposit with an operator. You will see it across affiliate marketing because CPA deals often depend on a deposit taking place. In the YouBet Partners terms, the concept that decides whether a referral counts is the qualifying player, which is broader than a deposit alone.
Qualifying player
Under clause 3.6, a player counts as qualifying only if all of these apply:
- the player is new to the operator and opened the account through your tracking link;
- the player is an adult, located in South Africa, and not an excluded person;
- the player passes the operator's identity (KYC) checks;
- for CPA and hybrid deals, the player meets the operator's minimum deposit, wagering and time conditions shown in your Commission Schedule;
- the operator accepts the player as qualifying and pays for that player; and
- the player was not referred in breach of the terms.
This explains why your registration count and your qualifying player count can differ. A sign-up is not the same as a qualifying player.
Clicks and registrations
Clicks and registrations normally appear in your Promoter Dashboard in real time, but they are for information only. They may be delayed, corrected or reversed, and commission is calculated from operator reports. If the operator's reports and the tracking platform differ, the operator's reports prevail. Changing or shortening tracking links can break tracking, so use them exactly as provided.
Tracking link and Commission Schedule
Your tracking link is the unique link, code or promo code that identifies your referrals. Your Commission Schedule is the page in your dashboard that shows, for each operator, your commission model, your rates and the products approved for promotion.
Payment terms in the dashboard
The payment section of a dashboard uses its own vocabulary. Here is what the main terms mean at YouBet Partners.
- Monthly statement: by the 5th business day of each month, a statement in your dashboard shows commission for the previous month and which amounts are still waiting for operator payment.
- Pay-when-paid: commission becomes payable only after the operator has paid YouBet Partners for your players, and only up to the amount paid.
- Payment date: each operator has its own payment date, shown in your Commission Schedule in your dashboard.
- Minimum payout: R500. Smaller amounts roll over to the next month until you reach the minimum.
- Payment methods: Skrill, Neteller or PayPal, or 1Voucher, OTT Voucher or Blu Voucher, with the voucher PIN sent to your registered email.
- Self-billed invoice: YouBet Partners prepares an invoice in your name, so you do not need to send your own unless you are VAT-registered.
All commission is calculated and paid in South African rand, and you are responsible for your own tax on it. If you have further questions about payments, review times or the rules for lottery content, the FAQ answers the questions new partners ask first.
Summary
Affiliate marketing for beginners becomes much simpler once the vocabulary is clear. CPA is a fixed, one-time amount per qualifying player; revenue share is a percentage of NGR; hybrid combines both. GGR is stakes less winnings, while NGR is GGR less bonuses, taxes and levies, payment costs, chargebacks, fraud losses and operator fees. FTD is an industry term for a first deposit, but at YouBet Partners the deciding concept is the qualifying player. There is no negative carryover unless an operator carries losses over, statements appear by the 5th business day, and payments are made once you reach R500. Throughout, the rules stay the same: licensed sports betting only, adult audiences only, and every promotion clearly labelled as advertising.
